the Saar the Saar

Brücke über die Saar The Saar, a tributary of the Mosel, is at its lower course between Serrig and Konz (lat. Confluenta = confluence of Saar and Mosel) one of the qualitatively most important areas for growing Riesling. Altogether 1.500 ha, for the most part Riesling, were cultivated in 1996 (the whole region Moselle-Saar-Ruwer comprises 13.000 ha).

Saarufer The Saar has Some essential climatic peculiarities that are responsible for its high wine quality:
Due to the temperate meteorological conditions the Riesling can in a very slow ripening process achieve its physiological fullripeness without producing too much sugar. Fully ripened wines, which are developed all their flavour and fruity acidity, will rarely exceed 12 % Vol. alcohol. On accound of the relatvely cool climate the wines keep a large amount of their natural acidities, which provide the backbone that let the wines mature for many years.

Blick auf die Burg The low temperatures are also responsible for the very late ripeness of the Riesling. For a full ripeness in Oktober (9,5 °C average temperatur) it needs to be grown on steep slopes that provide an optimal (nearly right) angle to the sun this late in the year. That means an inclination of 45 - 55 degrees. On such slopes the energy absorbtion is comparable to 700 km further south located flat sites. On such steep slopes -are only there - are light irradiations similar to Bordeaux! Flat sites are unsuitable for the growing of the Rieslings.

Leukbach durch Saarburg It is not without reason that many wine connoisseurs maintain that the best Rieslings come from Germany, the best German Riesling from Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, and the best Mosel-Saar-Ruwer from the Saar. Fact is that Saar Wines are distinguished for their particularly steely natural acidity, their pale colour and great complexity. Horst Dippel writes in his excellent Wine Lexicon: "But in good and vintage years they create true miracles and reach a filigree delicacy, remarkable complexity, expressivity, and elegance, that rightly makes them belong to the greatest white wines in the world."
