White Wine And Arterial Sclerosis White Wine And Arterial Sclerosis

Does white wine provide protection against arterial sclerosis?
"Prof.Dr. Gustav Belz"

Man is as old as his arteries. A pilot study was carried out in order to determine whether or not moderate consumption of wine actually slows down the aging process of the blood vessels. According to earlier studies a moderate consumption of red wine reduces the risk of arterial sclerosis occurring. This pathological vascular sclerosis can be a harbinger of a heart attack or a stroke.

The most recent test results show that white wine possibly possesses such a protective function as well. Prof.Dr. Gustav Belz, senior physician at the centre for cardiavascular pharmacology, dealt with the problem by means of a pilot test supported by the "Deutsche Wein Akademie". Arterial sclerosis is the most important and frequent pathological change of the arteries. The vessels become hard and thick, and they lose their elastic qualities and there is a narrowing of the lumen. The risk factors are, among others, nicotine, inflammations, high blood fat rates, high blood pressure, diabetes, age, stress and family stress.

The increasing vascular sclerosis leads to a restriction or, at worst, a cut off the blood supply to the affected organs or tissue. If this applies to the coronary vessels it could cause coronary insufficiency, coronary heart disease or even a heart attak. The severity of arterial sclerosis can be measured by means of the elastic qualities of the blood vessels. Belz and his research team have developed a procedure that does not subject the test person to stress. They measure the so-called pulse wave speed in the elasticity of the vessel. As there is a close relationship between arterial sclerosis, the aorta and coronary vessels the values registered could throw light upon the possible risk of a heart attack. During this pilot trial the elasticity of the aorta was measured among 28 persons who had regularly consumed moderate amounts of white wine (equal to 1 - 3 glasses per day) over the past twenty years. These findings were compared with those of a control group by whom such a regular consumption of wine was not documented. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Gerhard Wolf, lecturer for medical documentation, statistics and data processing, evaluated the results biometrically.

With the reservation resulting from the pilot character of the test the data points to the following knowledge: those who regularly drink moderate amounts of wine probably have less stiff, and therefore less sclerotic, blood vessels than comparable control persons. This underlines the assumption that there could be a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases and the described severe consequences, among wine drinkers. This data is not yet affected by the uncertainty of a pilot test. A follow.-up study is planned in order to substantiate the results by means of "hard data" and thus confirm the discovered trends.

This project requires a larger group of patients and a clearly defined control group. It is envisaged to create groups of patients each containing 100 persons, which is necessary and acceptable for epidemiological studies. By carrying out this follow-up study it is hoped that significant data will be gained regarding the interaction between health and moderate wine consumption.
