Wine and health - not a paradoxical
connection Prof. Dr. Klaus Jung
While the medical importance of
wine was accepted as a matter of course during the early centuries, the most
recognizable aspect of the development and prescription of so-called medicinal
wine has occurred since the introduction of modern scientific methods, namely
that alcohol has increasingly been brought to the fore as far as judging the
situation is concerned, and above all, has been tested as to its negative
effects on health and lifetime. This trend has been kept up until the present
day. Unfortunately, these scientific experiments are dominated by three pitiable
factors which cannot be transfered to our situation from an objective point of
view: first of all the fact that these trials are usually restricted to animals,
secondly pure alcohol (and not wine) is used in almost all cases, and thirdly
amounts are used which are completely unrealistic and by far exceed recommended
amounts.
Two glases a day are enoughIf the subject "wine and health" is dealt
with in a serious, critical and positive manner totally different conclusions
can be drawn: early descriptions of the history of mankind, but also modern
scientific research and further more one´s own experience point in a much more
positive direction.
Discussions with experts, connoisseurs and average
consumers which indicate, in contrast to hte trends shown in masscommunication,
state regulation and statistical hysteria a positive assessment of moderate wine
consumption in spite of certain restrictions. The question should not be whether
wine is or wine is not advantageous but more to the point in which case which
amount can be advantageous, by which amount the advantages and disadvantages
supersede each other and also which amounts can be expected to cause
damage.
Possilble positive effects of a moderate wine consumption on the entire
organism after Prof. Dr. Jung
Digestive organs: reflectory salivary, juice and ferment secretion;
appetite increase of the gastro-intestinal motor system; stimulation of the
blood flow.
Cardio-vascular system: reducation of the platelet aggregation;
reduction of thrombosis narrowing; promotion of fibrinolysis; economical heart
patterns, reduction of oxygen requirement, increase of the "good" heart
protective HDL-cholesterol, reduction of the "bad" LDL-cholesterol; stimulation
of the blood flow.
Respiration: increase of the respiratory volumes, blood circulations,
perfusion, increase of the immunological system; (bacterial and virusidal
characteristics).
Apparatus of locomotion:increase of bone density; stimulation of
calcium metabolic process; subjective increase of muscle power; stimulation of
the blood flow.
Skin: stimulation of metabolic process; inhibition of local
inflammations; enhancement of wound healing process;
astringent/coagulating/bacterial inhibiting/bacterial killing/wound healing
effect.
Hormone system: stimulation of thyroid glands, suprarenal gland,
pancreas, genital glands, increase of power of resistance (infects, rheumatism,
stress); increase of general working capacity. Efferent urinary
passages/kidneys: increase of the urinary flow; increase of diuresis with the
urine, stimulation of the blood flow.
Immune system: increase of the detoxication function (toxines, bacteria,
viruses); reduction of the viability of micro-organisms (such as coli,
staphylococci); increase of and increase in the activity of antioxidants
(Anthozyane, Resveratol, vitamins); reduction of the aging process.
Nervous system: prevention of the age-related reduction of brain
functions; increase of intellectual alertness; reduction of the aging process;
increase of the intellectual performance; creativity/phantasy increase;
euphoria; increase of the blood flow to the brain; increase of the oxygen
supply.
More recent scientific knowledge shows that a moderate consumtion
of wine can actually be recommended. And not only because of the possibility
that it does not cause physical harm, and is useful for the psyche, but bacause
it can also perhaps help to prevent certain diseases and in addition to this may
be in the position to compensate or even cure diseases in particular situations.
"moderate" is defined as 20 g alcohol for woman and 30 g alcohol for men, i.e. 1
to a maximum of 3 glases of wine. Together with a diet full of vital substances
such as a lot of fruit, vegetables and protein, the foundation has been laid for
a helthy life. The most important positive effects are shown in the table on
this page (after Prof.Dr.K.Jung).
People in the second half of life
profit from these possible positive effects. There is a good reason why wine is
described as the milk of the age. The basics mentioned here and additional
practical application by Prof. Dr. Jung.
10 points programme for practical application after Prof. Dr.
Jung:
- The effect of wine is different from other alcoholic drinks (stimulant,
antioxidants, influence on cholesterol).
- Wine is an important, potent nutrient (high amount of certain minerals,
but also vitamins and calories).
- Positive effect on the reflectory salivary, juice and ferment secretion
of the digestive organs (acid releaser, appetite inducing) (above all white
wine).
- Favourble effects on the cardio-vascular system (conservation of
elasticity, HDL-increase, LDL-reduction, reduction of platelate aggregation)
(more so red wine but also white wine).
- Bactericidal/virucidal qualities in the area of respiration and the skin
(provides protection against colds, increase of immune resistance).
- Simulation of the central nervous and phsycological processes with
comfortable results (increased blood flow to the brain, well-being).
- Activation of communication requirements, of joint experience, sense of
belonging to a group.
- Scientifically assured u-curve (ideal amunt for women 20 g, for men 30 g
of wine alcohol per day).
- Increase of the positive effect of wine when consumed with a
Mediterranean diet (wholefoods with lots of vitamins, fish, olive oil) and
with appropriate physical exercise (wandering, gymnastics).
- Wine - the milk of life (enjoyable, enhances physical and intellectual
well-being).
