Climate Climate

Germany´s continental climate gives warm summers, cold winters and clearly defined spring and autumn seasons. Rain falls throughout the year, the two wettest months being July and August. In spring late frosts present a potential hazard, as do storms and isolated hailstorms in summer. Atumns are normally long and warm. Within this broad framework, however, weather patterns can vary greatly from year to year. The climate also encourages the prudent grower to match carefully grape, microclimate and soil, and to plant a judicious mix of vine types.

quality wine regions The combination of warm summers and abundant rainfall facilitates the production of high yields in German vineyards. The climate in summer and autumn also helps to shape the style of wines produced, encouraging the grapes to ripen slowly, and thus retain their acidity whilst developing characteristic delicate flavours. In river areas the long warm autumns combine with a humid microclimate, fostering the development of noble rot known in Germany as Edelfäule.

Due to the variance in weather patterns, the quality of wine produced can also differ sharply from year to year; some years see a high proportion of top quality wines produced, other do not. For in Germany, quality is inextricably linked to ripeness, not only in the mind of the producer, but also in the country´s wine laws.
